Drive to Kalam (3 hrs via Bahrain). From Kalam take the Ushu road 8 km east. The forest entrance is clearly visible from the main track.
Motorbike taxis from Kalam bazaar reach Ushu in 20 minutes. Negotiate Rs 200β300 return including waiting time.
Energetic walkers can hike from Kalam to Ushu in about 1.5β2 hrs along the river road β a beautiful warm-up before entering the forest.

Wildlife AwarenessHimalayan black bears are present in upper Ushu. Make noise on forest trails, never approach wildlife and never leave food unattended at camp.
Leave No TraceUshu is pristine because visitors respect it. Carry all rubbish out, stay on paths and never break branches or pick wildflowers.
Layer UpThe forest can be 5β8Β°C cooler than Kalam town. Always bring a warm fleece and waterproof jacket even on sunny summer days.
Golden HoursVisit at dawn (5β7 AM) for mist and birdsong, or at dusk (5β7 PM) for golden light filtering through the ancient trees.

Bring Cash & SuppliesNo shops in the valley itself. Stock up on food, water and cash in Kalam before heading to Ushu. There's no connectivity in the forest.
